November 2006
Holiday season is underway, which means many companies will soon be sending gifts to customers, prospects and other industry friends. Appropriate gift-giving brings with it a tricky balance between generosity, excess and good taste. If your company plans to send gifts this holiday season, you may wish to follow these guidelines:
Don’t Go Overboard
While holiday gifts should have sufficient value to make a favorable impression on recipients, be careful not to go overboard. An over-the-top gift can be deemed as a ploy to buy more business, putting your customer or prospect in an awkward position. Rather than send your golf-crazy prospect that new top-of-the-line driver, invite them to play a round on the top course in your area. This tasteful gift can double as a great selling opportunity.
Make it Original
The most important factor when selecting appropriate gifts isn’t cost, but originality. Take a few minutes to reflect on some of the unique characteristics, hobbies or interests of your customers. Tying your gifts to these individual tastes will demonstrate that you take interest in their lives outside the office and appreciate their business.
Something to Share
Broadening your contacts within a customer’s organization is a key element of maintaining a solid relationship. Selecting a gift that can be shared will help stretch your awareness among all key personnel. Food is always well-received, is easy to order and ship thanks to the Web, and is scalable to let you include dozens of customers and prospects.
Remove Religion
Holiday gifts should be non-denominational; this should apply to the language on your cards and messages as well. “Happy Holidays” and “Season’s Greetings” are two natural choices that never offend. If you do choose to send a religious-themed gift or message, be absolutely sure it will be welcomed.
